The Christmas Kitchen Deadline: Why Calgary Kitchens Booked by Mid-September Finish Before the Holidays
In short
Book by mid-September and a $42,000 full kitchen renovation can be done before Christmas — Calgary's benchmark range is $35,000–$70,000, and the week-by-week countdown starts now.
Count Backwards From December 24
Here is the math nobody tells you in September: a full kitchen renovation in Calgary typically runs 8 to 12 weeks from signed contract to final walkthrough. Cabinets alone can take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive once ordered. If you want to host Christmas dinner in a finished kitchen, the real deadline is not December — it is the next two to three weeks. Book by mid-September and the timeline works. Wait until Thanksgiving and you are cooking the turkey on a camp stove.
This is the single busiest booking question we hear every fall, so here is the honest week-by-week countdown, with real Calgary benchmark pricing.
The Holiday Kitchen Countdown
| When | What needs to happen |
|---|---|
| Week of Sept 8–19 | Get your estimate, finalize scope, sign. Order cabinets and any special-order appliances immediately. |
| Late Sept – mid Oct | Design lock, permits if walls or plumbing move, materials ordered. Demo can start on schedule-friendly projects. |
| Mid Oct – mid Nov | Demo, rough-in electrical and plumbing, drywall, flooring. Cabinets arrive and go in. |
| Mid Nov – early Dec | Countertop template and install (allow 2 weeks after cabinets), backsplash, paint, hardware. |
| Dec 10–20 | Deficiency list, final clean. Buffer week — every good schedule has one. |
The two long poles are cabinets and countertops. Countertops cannot even be templated until cabinets are installed, which is why a project signed in November almost never finishes by Christmas no matter how hard everyone works.
What a Calgary Kitchen Costs in Fall 2026
These are benchmark ranges from our project store, sourced from current Calgary material and labour pricing — your final number depends on layout, finishes, and what the walls are hiding:
| Project | Benchmark range | Holiday-feasible if booked by |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen refresh (cabinets stay, new doors/counters/backsplash/paint) | From $17,500 | Mid-October |
| Full kitchen renovation | $35,000–$70,000 (from $42,000) | Mid-September |
| Custom kitchen (layout changes, custom cabinetry) | From $84,000 | Realistically, plan for spring |
Refresh or Full Reno? A 60-Second Gut Check
A refresh makes sense when the layout already works and the cabinet boxes are solid. A full renovation earns its price when the bones are the problem. Ask yourself:
- Do you fight the layout daily? Fridge door hitting the island, no landing zone beside the stove — that is a full-reno problem. Dated oak doors are a refresh problem.
- Are the cabinet boxes solid wood or plywood? If yes, new doors and counters can make them look brand new for a fraction of the cost.
- Is the flooring staying? If it needs to go, do it during the reno, not after. Installed LVP runs $3–$6 per square foot in Calgary and goes in fast during the flooring window of the schedule — see our LVP flooring project.
- Is your budget under $25,000? That is refresh territory. Stretching a full reno budget too thin is how projects stall at 90 percent done.
Three Ways to Protect Your Christmas Deadline
- Pick in-stock finishes. The single biggest schedule killer is a special-order tile stuck in a warehouse in Ontario. In-stock quartz colours and stocked cabinet lines can save three to four weeks.
- Decide everything before demo day. Every mid-project change order costs money and, worse in December, days. A locked design is a fast design.
- Bundle the paint. Painters are already on site and the furniture is already displaced. A main floor repaint benchmarks at $2,800–$4,500 in Calgary, and doing it the same week as the kitchen means one disruption instead of two — with the whole main floor guest-ready for the holidays.
